Does Age & Body Size Matter?
Age
Yoga can be adapted for people across the lifespan. As people get older, modifications may be helpful for changes in mobility, balance, strength, joint comfort, or medical conditions. Gentle yoga, senior-focused classes, and chair yoga are options for people who need more support or have limited mobility.
Body size
There is no ideal body type for yoga. A larger body may change the comfortable position of the feet, knees, hands, or torso in certain poses, so stance width, range of motion, and positioning may need to be adjusted. Blocks, straps, bolsters, cushions, walls, and chairs can make poses more comfortable and accessible.
The most important principle
The pose should adapt to the person—the person should not be forced into the pose. Beginners should avoid pushing into extreme positions and should work with an instructor who understands modifications and individual limitations.
