Alcohol sets off a cycle
The “hair of the dog” idea fits into that cycle. A drink may briefly take the edge off because it raises blood alcohol again, but it usually delays the crash and can prolong symptoms. NIAAA says more alcohol may temporarily minimize symptoms but can prolong the hangover.
What actually breaks the cycle:
ProblemBetter fixDehydrationWater + electrolytesLow blood sugar/weaknessToast, eggs, oatmeal, banana, soupStomach upsetBland food, ginger tea, avoid greasy overloadHeadache/body achesRest, fluids; be careful with pain relieversAnxiety/“hangxiety”Walk, shower, breathing, no more alcoholPoor sleepNap/rest; avoid caffeine late
The key is: do not restart the alcohol cycle. Cleveland Clinic says hangovers usually improve within a day, and the best approach is waiting it out and drinking water.
A strong practical rule:
Hydrate, eat lightly, rest, move gently — but don’t drink again to fix it.
