Breathing to Control Stress

Breathing will not make every problem disappear. But it can help us slow the moment down. It can give us time to think before we react. It can help release tension, restore focus, and create a greater sense of control.

The best time to practice controlled breathing is not only when you are stressed. Practice when you are calm, so the technique feels familiar when you need it most.

  • Pause.

  • Relax your shoulders.

  • Breathe in slowly and comfortably.

  • Breathe out slowly.

Repeat.

You cannot always control what happens around you. But you can learn to control how you respond. Start with your breath.
